Lisa Andersen, born in Ormond Beach, Florida, is a four-time world surfing champion. She won her titles back-to-back from 1994 to 1997, until an injury forced her to stop competing. She returned to the sport in 2000, was inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame in 2002, and the Surfing Walk of Fame in 2004. Helping to further break down the barriers between our perception of what female surfers were capable of (a tradition that started way back in pre-modern Hawaii and was carried on by the likes of Mary Ann Hawkins, Linda Benson, Joyce Hoffman, and others), Lisa surfed exquisitely, not just for a “girl,” but as someone who excelled under all conditions, regardless of gender. She is one of only four females to ever grace the cover of Surfer Magazine solo (Linda Merrill was the first in 1964; Margo Oberg in 1981; Lisa Andersen in 1996; and Carissa Moore was the fourth in 2009). She also contributed to the development of board shorts designed for women, a cornerstone of the Quiksilver/Roxy empire. To this day, Lisa continues to inspire a whole new generation of female surfers the world over.
This board is in the permanent SHACC collection, donated by Lisa Andersen.
