Jeff Alter will provide an introduction, exploring how the surf industry influences art, apparel, and the lifestyle it embodies, alongside an overview of SHACC’s mission to preserve the history, art, and culture of surfing.
Our featured speaker, Mark Johnson, is renowned for his exceptional craftsmanship and innovation with Hobie Surfboards, an iconic brand in surfing history. With a deep dedication to the art of board shaping, Johnson is celebrated for preserving surfing's heritage while pushing design boundaries. Johnson’s expertise in hydrodynamics and materials results in surfboards tailored for various styles and conditions. His work blends traditional shaping techniques with modern innovations, ensuring optimal performance for surfers of all levels. Notably, Johnson meticulously replicated one of Hobie Alter’s first ten boards from 1950, showcasing his reverence for the brand’s legacy.
Collaborating with surfing luminaries, Johnson creates boards that balance classic design principles with contemporary demands, making them highly sought after worldwide. His boards not only perform at the highest levels but also stand as works of art, embodying the timeless spirit of surfing.
